Business for Health Solutions (BHS) is an initiative of the Global Development Incubator (GDI), a non-profit organisation that builds start-ups, incubates partnerships, and strengthens existing organisations for social impact around the world.

We are a team from all parts of the globe, united by our passion to address real-world challenges with solutions that create shared value, along with social impact.

Margo Carlen
Project Director, BHS

Margo has enjoyed a diverse career in corporate & development finance, training and CSR and is experienced working in large multinationals and the non-profit sector.  She is passionate about doing business for social good.  She has a Diploma in CSR from the University of Geneva (thesis – Opportunities to increase Swiss Private Sector Engagement in Global Health), is a Chartered Accountant and is a board member of the Swiss non-profit Terre des Hommes Schweiz.

Dianne Young
Partnerships & Communications, BHS

Dianne has worked across a wide variety of areas within the corporate healthcare sector (diagnostics and pharmaceuticals), including sales & marketing, investor relations, sustainability and communications. While at Roche, she worked with partners to help build local capacity building programs to address healthcare challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. She is a strong believer in the power of all parties working together.

Chris Roe
Fundraising and General everything, GDI

Chris is a Senior Manager at GDI based in Berlin and Nairobi. Chris brings deep emerging markets experience to GDI having lived and worked in Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia and Kenya.  Over the last ten years, Chris has examined the role that business and the private sector can play in delivering social impact and is firmly of the belief that business principles can be harnessed to scale solutions which address the world’s toughest social, environmental and economic issues. Prior to GDI, Chris managed the climate change and cities work-streams on the Nigerian Infrastructure Advisory Facility – a £100m DFID funded technical assistance program which supported the Nigerian Government to unblock infrastructure bottlenecks. He has also set up and managed successful social enterprises in Ghana and Zambia. Chris holds an MBA from Said Business School, University of Oxford.


Elizabeth Amuli
Programs Specialist Tanzania, BHS

Liz is Public Health Specialist with a Medical degree, a Masters degree in Public Health and 8 years of experience in the health care field. She has developed and implemented public health interventions at the population level, working closely with stakeholders in the public as well as private sector.  Through her expertise in quality improvement, research methodologies and clinical health care she seeks to create solutions to improve health systems and healthcare for all.

Alice Gugelev
Managing Director Africa, GDI

Alice is a Director at GDI where she works with large corporations, commercial investors and INGOs to integrate social impact, innovation and social entrepreneurship efforts into their portfolios, and helps philanthropists and social enterprises more effectively create systems-level change. Prior to joining GDI, Alice worked at Bridgespan, Bain & Co, the World Bank and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi. She is the co-founder and executive director of The Muskoka Foundation, as well as the co-founder and chief strategy officer of AppMkr. Alice earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and has a double major BA in International Economics and East Asian Studies from Columbia University and Stanford Japan Center.

Sara Wallace Beatty
Communications Manager, GDI

Sara is the Communications Manager at GDI. She guides communications efforts across all focus areas, advances GDI thought leadership in external media, and oversees the branding process for new initiatives. Before joining GDI, Sara was part of the communications team at Dalberg Global Development Advisors and supported communications + fundraising at AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation. She has also worked at an array of journalism outlets including Media Matters for America, Philadelphia Magazine, and the Olive Press in Andalucía, Spain. Sara holds a BA in Sociology from Princeton University.

Tyler Nelson
Regional Director East Africa, BHS

Tyler Nelson is an experienced executive and manager of global health programs in international settings, with an academic background in Public Health (Brigham Young University - USA) and Health Systems (Georgetown University - USA). He has provided technical assistance to health systems and other health initiatives in the public, private and non-profit sectors in Central and South America and East and West Africa. Tyler’s expertise focuses on improving quality of primary health care services and strengthening health systems.

Jason Chen
Operations and Technical Expert, GDI

Jason Chen has spent his career at the intersection of  technology, global development, and management consulting.  Most recently, he was the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Vesper, a VC-backed technology company built to streamline office operations and administration.  He previously worked with the Clinton Health Access Initiative in global vaccine markets, interfacing with private foundations,  vaccine manufacturers, and global stakeholders like WHO, UNICEF, and Gavi to develop market-based solutions for access to vaccines.  He started his career in management consulting at PwC, primarily focused on M&A and market entry strategy. Jason has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and English from Yale University.
